Kidney Donor Awareness

Living Donation Information

Clear answers about
living kidney donation.

Living kidney donation is a serious decision — and you deserve honest, calm information. Read through the facts, then let CPMC take it from there. We never screen, evaluate, or collect donor information here.

What is living kidney donation?

A living kidney donation is when a healthy person voluntarily donates one of their two kidneys to someone who needs it. The human body can live well with a single kidney — and the remaining one typically adapts and compensates over time.

Unlike deceased-donor transplants, living donation often means shorter wait times and better outcomes for the recipient. For David, a living donor kidney could mean years of restored health, energy, and quality of life.

The process begins with a confidential inquiry to CPMC — not with David, not with this website. Your information goes directly to the transplant team, and you’re in control at every stage.

How the process works

Visit the official portal

Go to cpmckidneydonor.org and fill out the initial inquiry form — this is private and does not commit you to anything.

Confidential health screening

CPMC’s team reviews your information privately. David and his campaign are never shown your details.

Medical evaluation

If the initial screen looks promising, CPMC invites you for a thorough, no-cost medical evaluation at their facility.

Decision — always yours

You can say yes or no at any stage, for any reason, without consequence. The decision is always yours alone.

Surgery and recovery

If everything aligns, CPMC schedules and performs the surgery. Recovery is typically 2–4 weeks; most donors return to normal activities fully.

Remember: You can withdraw from this process at any point, for any reason. CPMC will never pressure or obligate you. The decision is always, entirely yours.

Myths vs. facts

Living donation is one of the most misunderstood areas of medicine. Here’s what the research actually says.

Myth

You need to be a family member to donate.

Fact

Living donors can be friends, coworkers, or even altruistic strangers. Biological relationship is not required.

Myth

Donating a kidney will significantly shorten my life.

Fact

Research shows that living kidney donors generally live long, healthy lives — comparable in longevity to non-donors. CPMC and your care team will review your specific health situation.

Myth

The process is public and my personal medical information is shared.

Fact

The entire screening and evaluation process is confidential. David and his campaign team never see your medical details. Everything goes through CPMC directly.

Myth

I'd have to pay all the costs myself.

Fact

Many costs related to the donation evaluation and surgery — including some travel expenses — are often covered. CPMC will walk you through what your specific situation looks like.

Myth

If I pass the initial screen, I'm automatically committed.

Fact

You can withdraw at any time, for any reason, throughout the entire process. CPMC will never pressure you.

Myth

My remaining kidney will have to work twice as hard.

Fact

The remaining kidney naturally compensates over time and typically functions very well long-term. Your CPMC medical team will explain what this means for you individually.

Your privacy is guaranteed.

When you visit the CPMC donor portal, your information goes directly to their medical team — not to David, not to this campaign, not to any third party. The screening process is completely confidential. David will not know you inquired unless you choose to tell him.
